Understanding SIP

Why SIP is the Smartest Way to Build Wealth

A Systematic Investment Plan automates wealth creation by harnessing compounding and rupee cost averaging — two of the most powerful forces in investing.

Rupee Cost Averaging

Your fixed monthly SIP buys more units when markets fall and fewer when they rise. Over time this reduces your average cost per unit, making volatility work in your favour.

Power of Compounding

Returns earn their own returns. A ₹5,000/month SIP at 12% becomes ₹11.6L in 10 years, ₹49.9L in 20 years, and ₹1.76Cr in 25 years — compounding accelerates over time.

Financial Discipline

Auto-debit invests your money before you can spend it. SIPs remove the temptation to time the market — a strategy that even seasoned fund managers consistently fail at.

Start Small, Dream Big

Begin with ₹500/month. Use Step-up SIP to increase automatically as your income grows. Flexibility to pause, modify, or stop at any time — no penalties or lock-ins.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SIP, returns, and getting started.

What is SIP and how does it work?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a method of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals — usually monthly. Each instalment buys mutual fund units at the prevailing NAV (Net Asset Value). Over time, this creates a large corpus through the dual power of compounding and rupee cost averaging.
What is the minimum amount to start a SIP?
Most mutual funds allow you to start a SIP with as little as ₹500 per month. There is no upper limit. You can increase or decrease your SIP amount anytime — no penalties apply for modifications. Starting small and increasing gradually with a Step-up SIP is a very effective strategy.
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No, SIP returns are not guaranteed as they are linked to market performance. However, historically, equity mutual funds have delivered 10–15% CAGR over long periods (10+ years). This calculator uses an assumed rate for illustration — actual returns may be higher or lower. Always invest with a long-term horizon of 5+ years.
Can I stop or pause my SIP anytime?
Yes. SIPs are completely flexible — you can pause, reduce, increase, or stop at any time without any penalty. However, we recommend not stopping during market downturns, as these periods are actually the best time to accumulate more units at lower prices. Pausing defeats the benefit of rupee cost averaging.
What is a Step-up SIP?
A Step-up SIP (also called Top-up SIP) automatically increases your monthly SIP by a fixed percentage each year. For example, starting at ₹5,000/month with a 10% step-up means you invest ₹5,500 in Year 2, ₹6,050 in Year 3, and so on. This aligns with your annual salary increments and dramatically boosts your final corpus.
What are the tax implications of SIP investments?
Each SIP instalment is treated as a separate investment for capital gains tax. For equity funds: gains held over 1 year (LTCG) are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh annually. Short-term gains (under 1 year) are taxed at 20%. ELSS funds offer ₹1.5 lakh tax deduction under Section 80C. Please consult a tax professional for personalised advice.
Which mutual fund is best for SIP?
The best fund depends on your goals, risk appetite, and investment horizon. For 10+ year wealth creation: large-cap or flexi-cap funds. For tax saving: ELSS funds. For moderate risk: balanced/hybrid funds. For short-term goals (3–5 yrs): debt funds.
